So, I think I’m going to start writing in this again. I need to. What else is my web site good for besides illigal downloads…shhhh ;)
Well To start, this will only matter to those people that care about video games, well this post anyways.
So let me link to a website that NO one has ever heard of, it’s called Penny-Arcade and they making a gaming comic. Well what’s good about this site is they discuss the politics about the gaming industry. Recently there has been a rumor going around about a certain gaming web site firing a reviewer over a 6/10 review for a game. For a quick review read over either this Penny-Arcade post or this post over at Kotaku. So there, you have the info. Let me say what I want to say.
The gaming industry recently has been under fire in my mind due to reviews becoming more commercial. Part of this has to do with Gabe and Tycho of Penny-Arcade. They had a whole series of posts about Gabe pissing a reviewer off at IGN. Link (bottom of page.) Linked again.
So what I think is very true was said by Gabe. Reviewers of games have too much pushing to actually finish the game to actually enjoy it. Hey I’ve played some horribly horrible games in my life. Did I enjoy them? Actually yes! Why because I wanted to play them. I play games I WANT to play. In a way, I feel horrible for the people who review games for a living. I doubt they want to play a game for fun if they are forced to endure deadlines and hours upon hours of hounding to get the job done. I know I’d hate that. So, this is the first part of why gaming Reviews are broken. Just take it as an opinion instead of a set rule.
Part 2, people take reviews too seriously. OMG! IT GOT AN 8/10! NO I CAN’T WASTE MY MONEY ON ANYTHING LESS THEN 9! Why? B/c you might actually like it? Play it b/c you want to.
Part 3, the person who got fired. This is surly the end of times for reviewers as we know it. I mean this too. He got fired (if this is true) for giving a game a BAD review. Why? It’s because the sponsor pulled money due to him giving a crappy game the sponsor made, a crappy score. I understand that. But he got fired for doing his job and not being a corrupt ass like everyone who fired him. If anything, his review would push the studio further.
So really, I think the industry will gain some ground and revise the way they do things. This includes how people ship games and how people advertise. Also, reviewing may be going to the wayside in favor of the more precise phrase “THIS IS MY FEELINGS ON THE GAME!” warning at the beginning. Will this stop people from complaining on forums? Never. May this incident change the face of reviewing, hopefully.
